Our society is trending towards living more simply. Less distractions and more focus on what is important to us in our lives. Cutting down on excess stuff, because let’s be honest- we have so much stuff, as well as eliminating things from our lives that bring us down (habits, people we associate with, etc.).

If you are aiming to live the simple life, but still want to make a change in your home through interior design, you might find yourself in a bit of a pickle.  After all, typically a renovation project involves acquiring even more stuff, right?

Although this is often the case, it doesn’t have to be.  If you put these following steps into action before your next home renovation project, you can make a big change in a simple way.

  1. 1 for 1 Rule.A great rule to live by is the 1 for 1 rule. Every time you obtain one new thing, donate or sell one thing you already own.  This way you are not gaining more things in the process. If you want to get real crazy you can give away or sell 2 things for every one thing you acquire.  This would definitely put you on the fast track to living the simple life.
  2. Consignment.Who says new things need to be brand new? A simpler way to live is to reclaim used items.  You can make them new by changing them yourself, but you can just think of it as recycling.  You will also save a great deal of money in the process!
  3. DIY.A simpler way to renovate is by finding DIY friendly projects.  Although it may intimidate you at first, you will probably surprise yourself throughout the process. An extremely easy DIY project that also makes a huge change is Faux Wall Paneling.  You can use them both on interior and exterior walls for a number of applications. They do not require expensive, heavy tools nor do they require a contractor to install. You can install them yourself in a matter of hours, and have something like a stone fireplace before the day’s end.  Check out our ‘Applications’ section for a full list on how these can be used.
  4. Do it in Stages. There is no need to freak out and try and renovate your whole home in a single weekend. Pace yourself.  Pick one room at a time and focus on it for awhile until you are happy with it. Trying to do too much in too little time will only stress you out, and take away your focus from the things in life that truly matter.  Take your time, decorate in stages, and make your life much more simple in the process.

Hopefully, these tips help you as you prepare for your next home DIY project, and as you prepare to SIMPLIFY your life. Remember to check out our website and see our new faux wall colors we have in for the fall.
